According to art experts, the meaning of Oni represents the demon’s ability to punish any evil or unjust act. The demonic mask features various evil creatures, and is a representation that symbolizes the struggle between evil and good.
HISTORICAL NOTES
During the Heian era Japanese Buddhism, which had already imported a part of Indian demonology, incorporated these beliefs by calling these creatures aka-oni (“red oni”) and ao-oni (“blue oni”) and making them the guardians of hell or torturers of damned souls.
